Bernard Darwin
“The thirteenth is, to my mind, especially if played against the wind, one of the bright, particular holes of the course. The island cut off on all sides by green is a complete bunker, and since the hole is 365 yards long we shall in any case have a good carrying second to play; but beyond this the green is of such a shape and contour that it is much easier to get near the pin from the left hand side of the fairway and we have to run some risk from the tee in order to reach that strategic point altogether a very fine hole, which makes golf what Mr. John Low said it ought to be, “a contest of risks.””
